Storytelling & Smarter Marketing: A Recap of the PBA’s March Meeting

If someone asked you to tell the story of your business in one post, one video, or even one sentence – could you do it? That was just one of the ideas explored at the March meeting of the Purcellville Business Association. Members gathered to share perspectives and practical strategies for communicating their value more clearly – and if you joined us this month, you likely walked away with a few new ideas about how to tell your business story and why that story matters.

The Purcellville Business Association gathered for its March meeting with a focus on marketing and messaging, bringing members together for a workshop built around the theme “Stories That Sell.” The lunch included both community updates and practical insights from local professionals.

We were pleased to hear from our platinum sponsor, Jason Sengpiehl, one of the region’s very top insurance agents. Jason shared some helpful perspective on thinking about insurance with the long-term in mind. His key takeaway? Saving money on insurance isn’t always about choosing the lowest deductible – it’s about understanding your coverage and making decisions that benefit you over time.

The meeting also includes updates on some exciting upcoming events around the community. The Purcellville Lions Club shared news about their golf tournament, while Joan Lehr of Purcellville Copy provided an update on the Shamrock Fest. Members also received the always anticipated community update from Town Councilmember Erin Rayner.

From there, the focus turned to the afternoon workshop.

Three local experts shared their perspectives on how businesses can tell more compelling stories through their marketing. First, Nathan Curby of Ethos Design & Branding explored the role storytelling plays in building a strong brand. He emphasized that stories tend to resonate with audiences far more than simple facts and figures. While data and information have their place, Nathan explained that people connect with narratives—stories that communicate purpose, values, and experiences. From visual identity to the messages businesses share across platforms, he reminded members that every brand has a story – and telling it well can make all the difference.

Next, Erin Lombardi of E.L. Strategic came prepared to walk PBA members through an abbreviated workshop on creating effective social media content. Her presentation included practical tips, a framework for building posts, and a take-home social media workbook designed to help members continue refining their messaging after the meeting.

Finally, Hannah Won of Raise the Bar Real Estate shared how businesses can nurture potential clients using YouTube. She illustrated how, even while she was standing in front of the room giving her presentation, her YouTube channel was continuing to introduce her brand and story to potential clients online. Her presentation highlighted how video content can organically build interest and trust with audiences long before they are ready to make a buying decision.

The meeting also marked a first for the PBA, as it was livestreamed for the first time, allowing members who couldn’t attend in person to tune in and participate remotely. A special thank you goes to Moon Bounce Media for producing the livestream and helping make the event accessible to members who joined virtually.

As always, the gathering reflected the collaborative spirit and practical support that make the PBA such a valuable resource for businesses across Western Loudoun. When local entrepreneurs, business leaders, and community partners come together to share ideas and experiences, all ships rise.
