Catoctin Creek Sets the Bar for Solar
Catoctin Creek Distillery has installed large solar array covering the roof of its new facility on Main Street in Purcellville, Virginia. The solar array, installed by Prospect Solar of Sterling, Virginia, will offset nearly 85% of the distillery’s energy usage, and on very sunny days will return energy into the public grid.
“We are thrilled to have our new solar plant,” said Scott Harris, owner and general manager of the distillery. “Since we began the distillery, we always looked for ways to improve our sustainability and green footprint. We already recycle all of our waste from the distilling process by making alcohol cleanser and certified organic cattle feeds. With the new solar plant, we are able to continue this process by reducing our energy footprint. Prospect Solar has been an excellent partner in this project.”
The Case Building, which the distillery now calls home, is a nearly perfect site for solar because of its southern-facing, gently sloping roof.
“We are honored to work with Catoctin Creek Distillery, a small business leading by example in terms of sustainability,” said Jim Stamer, President of Prospect Solar. “The majority of their operation will be powered by a 41kW rooftop solar array that is large enough to offset the electricity of about five average households. Their business will benefit from lower operating costs, and hedge against rising utility rates for at least 25 years. All of the solar equipment to be used in the installation has been manufactured in the U.S.A. Not only does Catoctin Creek produce local spirits, but they will also be producing local renewable energy for generations to come.”
